At Dream Makers Preschool, our Kindergarten Prep program in Boulder Colorado is significantly different from your other choices. Why? Each year, the academic and social requirements for children entering kindergarten increase. While we address the academic requirement, our main focus is on strengthening the spirit, and easing the fears of the social and emotional demands of the children once they enter kindergarten. When a child’s fears of a new school, new teachers, new routine, new friends, etc., are soothed, the child’s brain is ready to absorb the academics without any emotional barriers. Preschoolers, who leave Dream Makers to start kindergarten, leave with confidence, courage, and a clear and apparent eagerness to begin their new journey.
Our Kindergarten Prep afternoon program (available Tuesdays and Thursdays) are filled with reading, writing, and fun! Our Weekly Reader classroom magazines use skill-building non-fiction and exciting photography to explore curriculum topics. Following directions, name writing, and reading comprehension are all part of our Weekly Readers each week. We play kindergarten games such as matching opposites and rhyming words while doing a “hunt” for the matching card. Name bingo and shape bingo are favorite K-Prep games. Children rotate through “centers” for learning; patterning, puzzles, and matching objects to numbers are a few examples of our centers. Making eye contact, helping a friend open lunch containers, inviting a new friend to play, honoring our personal space, and using kind words are reinforced through song and puppetry. We sing about zipping our jackets, holding scissors, and saying please and thank you. We practice letter sound recognition, and numbers up to 30 with songs and fun activities. Using a fly swatter to find and swat a fly matching the number on a card is educational and fun! |
